Some Top Earning Bollywood Films Of 2012

The year 2012 was good for Bollywood. Till December, seven films have earned more than Rs 100 crore and they include Salman-Katrina starrer Ek Tha Tiger and Yash Chopra’s last directorial venture-Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

Salman’s Ek Tha Tiger was also the most searched Bollywood movie in India according to Google zeitgeist. Interestingly, Ek Tha Tiger also featured in top 10 global searches, also it was the highest grossing film of the year and has earned approximately 190 crore (according to the latest reports).

The first half of the year 2012 was dominated by small-budget films with unusual themes like Vidya Balan’s ‘Kahani’ – the woman-centric thriller; ‘Vicky Donor’ – based on sperm-donation and ‘Ishaqzaade’ – a rowdy, romantic cum action movie. These films have earned Rs 75 crore, Rs 45 crore and Rs 40 crore respectively. Irrfan Khan’s Pan Singh Tomar also won accolades from film critics.

The beginning of the second half saw entry of top-league actors like Hritik Roshan and Akshay Kumar with ‘Agneepath’ and ‘Rowdy Rathore’. Multi-starrer ‘Housefull 2′ also yielded gold at the box office. All of these movies have earned more than Rs 100 crore.

Ranbeer Kapoor’s ‘Barfi’, which was also India’s entry to Oscars, also did well at the box office with Rs 106 crore in India, itself.

The last quarter was dominated by Khans – Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir. Their releases ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ and ‘Talaash’ respectively became pots of gold. Saif Ali Khan’s ‘Cocktail’ was also a huge entertainment worldwide.

Salman’s ‘Dabangg 2′, which released this December, 21st is currently creating a rage at the box office. Directed by Arbaaz Khan, Dabangg 2 has earned Rs 100 crore in just five days of its opening.

The year 2012 was also good for actor Emraan Hashmi, as his three films, Jannat 2, Raaz 3 and Shanghai have done quite well. Interestingly, the serial-kisser won accolades from critics for his best performance instead of steamy-scenes.

Following is the brief account of some top earning Bollywood films of the year 2012 as on the first week of December. Box office earnings may vary and films are ranked according to the domestic net gross not overseas gross.

Ek Tha Tiger: It seems that Bollywood’s most eligible bachelor-Salman Khan shares a special relationship with success. His film fails to attract critics but masses. Salman’s Ek Tha Tiger was not only the top earning film in the year 2012 but also the top searched film on Google in India and the seventh most searched film in the world. Directed by Kabir Khan, it stars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. It grossed 190 crore and was the highest grossing film of 2012. It was the fastest Bollywood movie to kiss the magical 100 crore mark, that too within 6 days, breaking Bodyguard’s record of 7 days. The film made a total of 307 crore worldwide making it the second highest grossing Bollywood film of all time after 3 Idiots.

Rowdy Rathore: It was the second highest grossing film of 2012 with a turnover of Rs 133 crore at the domestic box office. It broke first day non-holiday record by collecting 16 crore at domestic box office, earlier created by Housefull 2 (14.8 crore).

Agneepath: Hritik Roshan’s and Sanjay Dutt’s starrer Agneepath has won accolades from critics as well as from masses with their stunning performances. It was the third highest grossing film of the year. The film has collected Rs 123 crore at the domestic box office and Rs 62 crore in overseas box office. This film broke the highest opening day record by collecting 21.76 crore on first day at domestic box office (it was later beaten by Ek Tha Tiger).

Housefull 2: Directed by Sajid Khan, Houseful 2 was the fourth highest grossing Bollywood movie of the year 2012. This multi-starrer movie has collected 114 crore at domestic box office and 74 crore at overseas box office. This is the first film of Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and Jacqueline Fernandez to cross 100 crore mark.

Barfi: Ranbeer Kapoor once again proved his exceptional acting talent with Barfi, where he played the role of a dump and deaf boy-Murphy. This film has collected Rs 106 crore at the domestic box office. The film also featured Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz in the lead roles as was directed by Anurag Basu. It was India’s entry to Oscars.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan: Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan was the sixth highest grossing film of the year 2012. It was the last directorial venture of the king of romance ‘Yash Chopra’. It also starred Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in the lead role. This film was the sixth highest grossing film as on the first week of December. It is currently running across various screens in India and abroad.

Bol Bachchan: Directed by Rohit Shetty, Bol Bachchan was a comedy film that featured Ajay Devgan, Abhishek Bachchan, Asin Thottumkal, Prachi Desai and Arshad Warsi. The film was the seventh highest grossing film of 2012.
